To give the participants a broader outlook in their approach and help them present their ideas in a more effective/viable form we would here with present a brief over view & a general idea of embedded systems and their multi-disciplinary applications.
To define in simple terms embedded systems are miniaturized, low power consuming, fast responding, high availability components & applications which are embedded in other devices and controls to give them a certain level of intelligence or automation.
In general an embedded system is characterized by the combination of one or more of the following technologies:
- A low level programming language to issue time & space complexities like C
- A processor or more suitably a microcontroller/DSP
- Networking protocols to carry out the interfacing/ communication
between modules/ components.
- An OS supporting the above and a real time Operating System
Embedded systems in today's modern times have sneaked their way into every utility of every day life from microwave ovens at home to automatic door opening in shopping malls; from pacemakers to satellites; from cars to rockets; from mobiles to set-top boxes; from house hold security to complex defense systems; from simulation & design to automated manufacturing so on and so fourth. With advancements in low power circuitry, opto-electronics, smarter sensors, smaller chips & powerful controllers the size of these devices is getting smaller & smaller with appreciable rise in processing capability and faster response ( in the order of 100th of a second).
In fact there are no bounds on areas where we can use the embedded systems to attain better response time, automation & higher accuracy.
In general we would like to categories few areas where the embedded systems are increasingly being used:
- Robotics
- Industrial automation
- Consumer electronics & entertainment
- Health & Biomedical
- Automotive
- Aerospace
- Wireless & telecom
- Renewable Energy & Environment
- Surveillance & security
- Defense & military applications
- Biometrics
- Communication & protocols
- Steering & controls
- Mechatronics
The above application areas are indicative only we request the teams to look at not only the above but beyond these areas and include futuristic scope as well as ideas that address to the general problems faced by the masses at large.
We hope & believe that with inputs from bright minds we would certainly be able to stumble upon industry viable ideas that will help us set standards to be followed and help us in becoming a major R&D and product development hub.
